Newport, Rhode Island is a haven for all things in a shell. Accordingly, you must visit Benjamin’s Raw Bar in Newport if you are a fan of raw shellfish (especially the super sweet little neck clams). The deals here are very reasonable at certain times of the day. For instance, fresh local oysters are only ONE dollar between 12 – 2:00 p.m. There is also an “Earlybird” lobster special for only $13.95 from 4pm – 7pm. Not too shabby!
Since it was lunchtime, we went for the raw bar special of littleneck clams, ice-cold and delicious oysters, and some nicely prepared shrimp cocktail. I’m a huge fan of oysters, but I must say the local little neck clams at Benjamin’s were an epiphany. They are super sweet with just a hint of brine in the aftertaste. These cold water clams were amazing. Make sure to put some into your raw bar order!
The lunch special today was the fried scallop sandwich, which was served on a toasted buttery roll, for around 8 dollars! Ridiculously good, with a generous amount of perfectly fried scallops falling off the bun. You could easily charge double the price for this sandwich anywhere in New York City.
After lunch, I recommend shopping and carousing around Newport, touring the Mansions, and ending the day with a lovely sunset over the ocean.
